Eyes: sensitivity to lightClick here to open a printable versionPhotophobia is the term used to describe sensitivity to light. People who experience symptoms of photophobia typically complain of pain and discomfort to their eyes when they are exposed to bright light. Several eye problems/diseases may cause photophobia. If your pupils are not able to adjust their size due to muscular or neural disease then they are often not able to constrict, making the hole through which light passes smaller, thereby reducing the amount of light entering the eyes. Trauma, injuries or damage to the eyes or surrounding tissues may increase the eyes sensitivity to light. People who suffer from severe headaches and migraines often experience sensitivity to light during their migraine/headache. The use of certain medications as well as alcohol indulgence may increase the eyes’ sensitivity to light. People with fair skin and pigment disorders are usually more susceptible to photophobia than people with darker skin and brown eyes. If you experience photophobia for longer than one week then please consult your healthcare practitioner. TreatmentEyebright |
