Dog bites

Click here to open a printable version

Dogs usually only bite in self defence when they feel threatened, scared or are provoked. Whatever the reason for the dog bite, the bite itself must be carefully cleaned as dogs mouths contain numerous bacteria which may enter the wound leaving it infected. A specific concern with regards to a dog bit is tetanus.

A bite from a wild dog should be treated by a healthcare practitioner as the bite victim may contract rabies if bitten by a rabid dog (a dog with rabies). Other concerns include the extent of damage to the tissues, bleeding and the depth of the wound. A deep tear in the skin may need to be stitched in order to speed up the healing process, prevent further bleeding and infections, and reduce scarring. Please consult your healthcare practitioner if your dog bites are not showing signs of healing within three days or if there is any sign of infection around the bite (redness, swelling, heat, pus or red streaks radiating form the wound).
