Dermatitis

Dermatitis refers to the inflammation of the skin most commonly as a result of an allergic reaction. Symptoms of dermatitis include itching, redness, flaking and increased sensitivity over the affected area. The itching and discomfort may be so severe that a person may scratch themselves so much that blood is drawn and wounds are formed. This only compounds the situation and causes more discomfort.

This visual appearance of the dermatitis may also cause a person to be self-conscious and embarrassed. An attempt to keep affected areas covered often limits a person’s activities and choice of clothing and comfort.

Causes of dermatitis include reactions to creams or skin products, soaps, clothing, certain materials or fabric softeners, metals for example jewellery, and even certain foods may cause or aggravate dermatitis. A careful assessment of all possible causes and the subsequent removal of the cause of the inflammation are vital when treating and dealing with dermatitis. Please consult your healthcare practitioner if your symptoms persist for longer than three days.
