Corns

Click here to open a printable version

Occasionally the skin that hardens in response to pressure or friction (as occurs with callouses), may continue growing and thickening.  This results in the formation of a hardened and elevated area on your skin.  This thickened, hardened and raised area is known as a corn.  Corns most commonly occur on areas of skin that are hairless and are quite thin, for example the tips of your fingers and the sides of your toes.  Corns do not usually cause any complications other than the fact that a person with corns may feel self-conscious of the area with the corn.  Occasionally a corn may produce pain and discomfort as they press or rub on a surface (like a shoe).  Larger corns may also be caught on objects and torn open which may cause pain and bleeding if the tear is deep enough.  Corns can be surgically removed, but sometimes the skin remains over-active and in this case the corns may re-grow.
