Runny nose
Click here to open a printable versionA runny nose most commonly occurs during a cold or allergy and is usually accompanied by sneezing. The term coryza generally refers to the nasal symptoms of a head cold. In the case of allergies, like hayfever, and colds, the lining of the nasal cavity is irritated and inflamed by the presence of a virus or an allergen (an irritant such as dust, pollen or pet hair). In response to the infection/irritation, the mucous membranes lining your nose increases the amount of mucous produced in an attempt to flush out the invading organisms/allergen.
Other causes of a runny nose (coryza) include very spicy foods such as chillies and cold temperatures. If you experience symptoms of a runny nose for longer than three weeks then it is advisable to consult a healthcare practitioner.
