HivesClick here to open a printable versionHives are red, raised, areas on the skin, which may or may not have blisters associated with them, that develop into an inflammation of the skin. They may occur on any part of the body and their size is variable. Some individuals do not experience any other symptoms with the hives, however others may experience severe burning, itching and stinging. Most commonly, the inflammation is due to contact with a substance that triggers an allergic reaction. However some patients are not able to link their attacks of hives to any specific substance. In these individuals, the cause is likely to occur as a result of some form of an auto immune (body attacks itself) reaction and may also be induced by stress and emotions. The hives may take a few minutes or a few hours to form and they may last hours, days or even months. Chronic hives are hives which have lasted longer than six weeks. Due to the appearance of the hives and the possible pain and discomfort associated with them, hives may affect an individual on a mental/emotional level as well as a physical level. People with hives may not want to be seen and may become withdrawn, anxious and depressed. The pain may cause great distress and anxiety. It is important for people who are prone to attacks of hives, to know that in most instances they are treatable and are usually self limiting. If you suffer from attacks of hives which cause you mental, emotional or physical discomfort, then please consult a healthcare practitioner. TreatmentMixed AllergensCombin Assist Allergy |
