Sneezing

Click here to open a printable version

Sneezing is a reflex response to an irritation of the lining of your nasal passages.  When there is an irritation, such as an allergen (see Allergies) or a foreign organism, then your mucous membranes (the specialised skin lining the inside of your nose), increase the amount of mucous production (see Runny nose) in an attempt to trap the cause of the irritation. The fine hairs in your nose also help to trap the irritant. Sneezing is the forceful expulsion of air through your nose and mouth.  The purpose of sneezing is to forcefully expel the irritant with the air.
